Feedback on Course Work
|
|
|
|
|
Here is how you will get feedback on your work throughout the semester and what you can do with that feedback:
Each of you has an individual Google sheet for this course
summarizing your progress towards meeting all the learning objectives in this course.
You will be given access to this sheet in the early weeks of the semester.
You can find a summary of the numeric results of the assessments in the first tab, which is called "Progress Sheet"
Timelines
Once the TA has completely finished dealing with all the original submissions of an assessment,
s/he will indicate the date at which this first pass was completed in the column called "Feedback posted"
of the tab called "4: Submission Details" of your Google sheet.
Anything submitted before that should have been assessed,
and anything after that date will be considered a resubmission that will be assessed whenever time permits.
Numeric Feedback
The work submitted to demonstrate that each learning objective has been met will be assessed using the following scale:
- Work has not been submitted or assessed yet
- Work was submitted but does not demonstrate that learning objective has been met.
Because we are looking for evidence that learning has taken place,
submissions that are clearly simply copied from other sources will not be assessed as providing this evidence of learning.
To provide this evidence, it is better to rephrase ideas using your own words, or elaborate on the explanations you found,
or explain using examples. If this is too challenging, another way to demonstrate this learning is by discussing the idea with the
instructor during an office hour.
- Learning objective has been met
- Learning objective has been mastered
Written Feedback
When work for a learning objective has been submitted,
but the learning objective has not been mastered,
you may receive additional written feedback on your work.
Where you can find it will depend on how the work was submitted:
- The feedback for work submitted in D2L works the normal way:
Once a quiz (or late lab) has been assessed, you should be able to access it and see the feedback.
If you can't, please let the instructor know. D2L is finicky and sometimes needs extra tweaking.
- If the work was submitted in Crowdmark, then you will also receive something from Crowdmark telling you how to view the feedback.
- Because the programming assignments are mostly graded with scripts that you can run yourselves,
you should mostly not be surprised by the results of their assessments in your progress sheet.
If we find it necessary to give you additional feedback,
it will be in the form of a text file available your course submit directory on the moons.
This file will have a name like "A1feedback" or "A1 tests" that makes it clear
which assignment the feedback is for and what type of feedback it is.
Instructions about working with your course submit directory are in the
Submission Information page.
Following Up On Feedback
Once you have received feedback on a set of learning objectives:
- If an assessment indicates that you have mastered a learning objective,
and a 3 is recorded for that objective in your progress sheet,
you can ignore all subsequent opportunities to meet this learning objective,
unless the associated work is needed to meet a followup learning objective.
For example: you may meet 3Ba (Detect an ambiguity in a given grammar and explain why it is ambiguous) in lab3iii,
but not 3Aa (Remove the ambiguity in a given grammar).
In order to make up 3Aa in quiz34, you will need to do 3Ba in that same quiz because the two questions are about the same grammar,
but this will not impact negatively your existing assessment for 3Ba.
- If an assessment indicates that you have met a learning objective,
and a 2 is recorded for that objective in your progress sheet,
you can work to demonstrate your mastery as described in the next paragraph,
or you may decide to focus your efforts on other work.
- If an assessment indicates that you have not met a learning objective,
and a 1 is recorded for that objective in your progress sheet,
please read the feedback on this work,
and either resubmit the work or demonstrate your knowledge orally during an office hour.
If do not understand any of the feedback you have received,
then the best way to deal with it is to discuss it in a breakout room during an office hour.
- If an assessment indicates that you have not submitted the work needed to meet a learning objective,
and a 0 is recorded for that objective in your progress sheet,
then the first step is to resubmit the work to be assessed.
