This course uses the computer facilities provided by the Department of Computer Science.
Since you are registered in CPS710, our system administrators will create an account for you
that will allow you to work in the Computer Science labs and also use the department's UNIX
systems, no matter which program you are registered in.
You can find fairly detailed information about the computer science facilities in the
User Guide to DCS Facilities
Here are a few things that you should learn to do with this account:
Your account is your short userid that you can obtain from D2L.
It is at most 8 characters long.
Using this account ID, you will need to login into one of the PCs in your lab and
change your password
Later in the course you will need to login to one of the unix servers
to work on your assignments and submit them.
Unless you are planning to do all your work for this course in the Computer Science labs,
you will need to install an SSH Client program on your computer to do this.
I personally like
MobaXterm
The name of the server you will want to use is moon.cs.torontomu.ca
The first things you will want to do once you login to moon is to forward your
cs email to your torontomu.ca email acount. To do this type the following line:
echo youremailaddress >.forward
where youremailaddress is the address that you want to forward your email to.
Then, before you actually need to submit your assignment, you should
spend some time learning how to upload files and submit them. You can ask one of your
computer science classmates, or the TA during one of the labs, or the course instructor
during an office hour to show you how to do that.
Just to summarize, though:
The files are uploaded using the File Transfer Window
The files are submitted using the Terminal Window:
Go to the directory where you have uploaded the files using the cd command:
cd directory-path
Submit your file
submit-cps710 filename
